As the weather turns cold, it’s time to get your farm ready to withstand the winter ahead. Keep reading to find out how to get your farm and all the farm equipment ready for the coming snow and ice!

Repair Fences

Remember those broken posts that you’ve been walking past all summer? Now is the time to go out and repair them. Ride or walk around your property and make a list of any fence repairs you need to make and the supplies you’ll need like extra wood, barbed wire, or chain-link fencing.

Winterize Farm Equipment

There are several pieces of machinery that you’re not going to use this winter. Use this time to get your tractors, plows, tillers, and other farm equipment repaired, cleaned, and winterized. Here are a few things we recommend you do:

  • Drain your fuel systems to prevent the water in gasoline from separating and causing corrosion.
  • Remove batteries and place them on tenders in a warm area so that they remain charged up through the winter.
  • Change oil and oil filter.
  • Clean and sharpen blades.
  • Check your owner’s manual for each piece of equipment to see what the manufacturer’s winter storage recommendations are.

For any equipment you intend to use during winter (for example, using your tractor for snow removal), you’ll want to check the tire pressure often because the cold can drop your psi levels significantly.

Preserve Your Harvest

You’ve likely got a lot of crops to harvest and you’ll want to make sure that whatever you intend to use on the farm is well-preserved for winter. Fortunately, modern devices have made it much easier than it was in the past to can and preserve fruits and vegetables. You can also freeze-cut fruits and vegetables instead of canning them to use all winter long. Now is also a great time to plan out some great meals to prepare during the winter so that you can stock up on dry goods and staple foods when you go into town, saving you money and effort later on.
