Tractor Attachments and Implements: Differences and Similarities
Tractors are a vital and versatile tool that turn any number of agricultural or construction efforts from impossible tasks to a fairly straightforward operation. Part of that versatility is their usage of implements and attachments, but those two categories can be confusing to sort out on your own.
We here at New South Tractor want to help you understand your tools, so we’ve put together a brief rundown on the differences and similarities between tractor attachments and implements, below. The Definitions
It’s important to note that these terms don’t have strict definitions, and some manufacturers, dealers, and operators use the terms interchangeably. But there are some distinctions that can help sort them out.
For one, an attachment is a supplementary device to the tractor. This can include anything from an upgraded seat or cab stereo to tools like front loaders and backhoes.
Implements, on the other hand, are tools that are designed and used for specific purposes. These can include blades and spreaders.
How to Connect Them
Attachments and implements can be connected to a tractor in one of three ways. Front-mounted options, including front loaders, attach to the sides of the tractor’s engine and move through the use of hydraulics. Loader arms can also be equipped with a variety of tools to replace the bucket, such as a pallet fork.
The second option is a mid-mounted position. This isn’t an overly popular option because the process of mounting and dismounting attachments and implements here is tedious. Mower decks are the most common type of mid-mounted accessory, which turns a tractor into a giant lawn mower.
The final option is a rear-mounted setup. These can either be set up with a drawbar or a three-point hitch. The hitch is a more popular design since it can easily raise and lower the implement or attachment. Tools that use this include tillers, which are pulled behind the tractor to increase soil aeration.
Popular Tools
Some of the most popular tractor implements and attachments include:
- Post hole diggers, which can create quick, uniform, and stable holes for planting trees or placing fence posts
- Brush cutters, which can help clear away unwanted and stubborn vegetation
- Rakes, which can condition the soil and remove debris
