New Holland History
New Holland’s legacy dates back to 1895 when founder Abram “Abe” Zimmerman started the company in its namesake city in the state of Pennsylvania. Zimmerman opened a blacksmith shop that he finally used to sell small stationary engines developed by him. Most engines at the time were water-cooled and they would end up freezing in cold temperatures, breaking the surrounding cast iron. Zimmerman came up with the idea of using a bowl-shaped water jacket that allowed ice to expand without damaging the metal.
Following the success of engine prototypes, Zimmerman launched his company in 1903 by the name of New Holland Machine Company. His focus was to manufacture equipment to help the farmers in his region do their work more efficiently and increase productivity. New Holland products were immensely successful resulting in a profit of nearly $1,900 in 1904, which is worth more than $50,000 in terms of 2019 dollars.
Over the years, the company expanded its operations and became a conglomerate of many different companies. First, it was sold to Sperry in 1946 and by 1986 the automobile manufacturer Ford acquired the company. During the 1990s, Fiat purchased a large stake in New Holland. With the help of these sales, the company gained international recognition and increased its market share.
